After multiple failed attempts to carry pregnancy to term, a distraught 24-year-old became pregnant after a minimally invasive surgery at one of city’s private hospitals.
Apollo Hospitals marked the occasion of completion of 100 robotic myomectomies or surgical removal of uterine fibroids, here on Monday. Rooma Sinha, Senior Consultant Gynaecologist at the hospital, said robotic surgeries carry smaller healing times, shorter hospital stay, smaller risk of injury and greater accuracy compared to open-wound surgeries and conventional laproscopic surgery. The trade-off is a 30% higher cost compared to the latter, she added.
“The surgeon operates robotic arms with precise instruments which go through small incisions in the abdomen. Fibroids as big as 23 cm can be removed,” Dr. Sinha said.
In the case of the woman from Hyderabad, who was presented at Monday’s media gathering, Dr. Sinha said she underwent surgery in 2013 and became pregnant in 2014. She gave birth and is now pregnant for the second time.
