Hailstorms, showers and gales lashed several parts of the twin cities even as power outages continued on Wednesday.
Heavy hailstorm was reported from Chandulal Baradari, Chanchalguda, Saidabad, Santhoshnagar, Falaknuma, Moghalpura, Dilsukhnagar, Kothapet, L.B. Nagar and Vanasthalipuram.
“There was heavy rain and hailstorm accompanied by strong winds. I saw stones the size of cricket balls falling from the skies. Power went off at 7.30 p.m. soon after the rain started lashing and was not restored for a long time,” said Mohan Reddy, a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Kothapet.
Old City worst-hit
Almost all corners of the city, a majority of them in the Old City, experienced frequent power cuts. According to official information, nearly 75 11kV feeders tripped in the metro zone of CPDCL alone -- most of them in the Old City, Secunderabad, Begumpet and Banjara Hills.
Trees and branches falling on power lines resulted in several hours of outage in many areas. Connectivity problems dogging the BSNL mobile network proved to be a major hurdle for CPDCL officials in reaching out to the affected areas, a senior official said.
Water-logging
Water-logging and traffic snarls were also reported from Marredpally, Malkajgiri, Habsiguda, Nacharam and other areas. A few stretches at Falaknuma, Bahadurpura and Charminar were under sheets of water. At Chandulal Baradari, Dabeerpura and Azampura, it was reported that a few tree branches had collapsed. However, no one was injured in these incidents.
Sewage overflow at Bahadurpura made commuting tough for motorists from Aramgarh and Jiyaguda to reach their respective destinations. Flexiboards fell off at Punjagutta, Necklace Road and a few places.
In the meantime, GHMC has issued warnings to different advertisement agencies instructing them to check the structural stability of their respective hoardings and unipoles. It warned that the agencies would be blacklisted, if any of them were found to have been uprooted or damaged.
Thundershowers
The Met authorities said the weather could be cloudy in the city on Thursday with chances of rain or thundershowers. The city recorded 41.04 mm of rainfall on Tuesday night.
