‘Airport connectivity from all metro terminals later’

Balanagar Metro Station renamed after Babasaheb

The State government is serious about providing metro rail connectivity to the international airport at Shamshabad from all existing terminal stations of L.B. Nagar, Falaknuma and Miyapur. But, for now, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has directed that airport connectivity be provided from Gachibowli as first part of phase two.

This will be done considering the increasing traffic from that part of the capital towards the airport and also because of rapid development in the west side, said Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) managing director N.V.S. Reddy.

He was addressing a gathering after announcing that the Balanagar overhead metro rail station on Corridor One — Miyapur to L.B. Nagar — will henceforth be known as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Balanagar Metro Rail station. The change in nomenclature was taken up following several representations made by several Dalit and other organisations.

The ceremony was taken up as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. Ambedkar and in the presence of SC/ST chairman Y. Srinivas, MP Malla Reddy and MLA M. Krishna Rao. HMR MD said the construction for the first phase of the metro rail project is proceeding in the remaining stretches of 72 km across the three corridors. The next stretch, which is likely to be opened for commercial operations and the public to clamber on, will be between Ameerpet and L.B. Nagar, thus completing the entire Corridor One. After that, the stretch between Ameerpet and Hi-Tec City will be opened, and this will nearly complete the Corridor Three — Nagole to Hi-Tec City. Work from Hi-Tec City to Raidurg will continue for another year, but before that, the Corridor Two line from Jubilee Bus Station to MGBS could be completed.
