CPI State secretary Chada Venkat Reddy and leaders and workers from the party were apprehended by the police, when they were agitating for house sites for Dalits in Rajendra Nagar of Ranga Reddy district here on Wednesday.

Some 75 Dalit families were allotted 280 acres of land for housing as part of the 20-point programme by the late prime minister Indira Gandhi, but later the TDP government had taken back part of the land for tourism centre. Though a number of representations were made to officials including RDO, Collector and others, for distribution of the remaining land, there has not been any response, which prompted the direct agitation by the CPI leaders, according to a press release.

Cases booked

The agitating leaders, including Mr.Venkat Reddy, Bala Mallesh and Srisailam Goud, were arrested and taken to Moinabad police station where they were made to sit till evening, and slapped with cases under various sections, it said.

Mr.Venkat Reddy, while condemning the police high-handedness, demanded that gangster Nayeem’s diary be made public where he mentioned the names of politicians who encroached vast tracts of land in Ranga Reddy district. The encroachers, instead, were being provided protection under the TRS umbrella, he alleged.

The Dalits in Rajendera Nagar were allotted pattas long back, but not given certificates till now, Mr. Reddy said and demanded house sites be given immediately.
