The Crafts Council of Telangana (CCT) on Friday honoured three eminent weavers, including Sepavat Angoori, for their role in reviving and bringing glory to their craft.
P.M. Eeshwarudu was honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his role in resurrecting the dying craft of Kalamkari using both old and new techniques. It was Mr. Eeshwarudu, along with his father Nageshwar Rao, who donned the role of torch-bearers when Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya approached them for help in breathing new life into the craft. “I am delighted with the award, as well as the sight of seeing durries that are on display which show that our crafts are on the path of revival,” he said, while receiving the honour from IAS officer Karuna Vakati at a convention centre in the city.
Also honoured on the occasion was Jella Ramdas for his role in popularising double ikkat technique.
“Our government is willing to go one extra step to help craftsmen and artisans in the State. We will consider giving health cards to artisans so that health is no longer a worry for them,” promised Ms. Vakati during the event.
