Two women died in the last two days following C-section procedure at Gandhi Hospital due to heavy blood loss post surgery. The circumstances that led to the deaths were similar to those that had led to five maternal fatalities at Niloufer Hospital earlier this month.
The women, Ramiza Jabeen (27) and S. Lakshmi (22), underwent C-section procedure to deliver healthy babies on Saturday. Sources in the hospital revealed that the women suffered heavy bleeding the next day and were administered about 10 units of blood and attempts to halt bleeding went in vain. While Lakshmi succumbed on Sunday, Jabeen died a few hours later on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
“Both women developed bleeding after surgery and all efforts were made to control it. But co-morbid conditions worsened their condition.
A hysterectomy was also performed on one of them,” a medico in the hospital said while claiming that there was no reason to suspect negligence or inadequacy of post-surgical care.
It was learnt that hysterectomy or removal of uterus was performed on Jabeen as her uterus had fibroids and her uterine bleeding was uncontrolled due to a condition called placenta praevia of the highest grade. It is a complication in pregnancy where the placenta implants close to uterus opening, when in normal cases it implants at the top of the uterus.
In Jabeen’s case, the placenta had completely covered the uterine opening, resulting in heavy bleeding.
In the case of Lakshmi, sources said, she was eight days past her delivery date and had also suffered a head injury which was causing epileptic seizures.
The baby’s position was also abnormal, warranting a caesarean.
The deaths at Niloufer had left the medical community and the government baffled, leading the latter to institute an inquiry by the Hyderabad District Collector.
