Member of Legislative Council Akula Lalitha of Congress has appealed to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to fulfil the demands of assistant professors who have been working for several years now at various universities in Telangana and issue orders for the payment of equal salary for equal work.

Expressing her solidarity with the agitating contract teaching staff at the Telangana University, here on Thursday, she said that it was unfortunate that assistant professors, who had taken an active part in the statehood movement, were in dire state with paltry salaries. They fought for better wages in the unified State and were fighting for the same even after Telangana became a reality, she pointed out.

Students sacrificed their valuable time and academics during the agitation thinking that their lives would be comfortable with good jobs and salaries, but their hopes were getting dashed with the indifferent attitude of the Chief Minister, she said warning that if the same situation continued the student community would revolt against the Government.

Referring to the delay in the implementation of Supreme Court’s decision to pay equal wage for equal work, she suggested to the Government to take immediate steps to fulfil the demands of agitating contract assistant professors.

She also urged the Chief Minister to intervene directly to settle the issue in view of the loss of precious academic time of students.

Ms. Lalitha, earlier, sat in for dharna along with striking teaching staff for a few minutes at their camp.
