Telangana Left parties have demanded that ‘Rohith Vemula Act’ be enacted to curb caste-related discrimination in universities, and that the Central Ministers and Vice-Chancellor responsible for dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula’s death be punished severely.
A meeting led by CPI(M) unanimously passed a resolution to this effect on Tuesday, on the death anniversary of Rohith.
Rohith’s conviction for social justice, secularism and his opposition to capital punishment had led to his suspension from certain spaces in the university, a statement from the parties said.
To this day, those responsible for his suicide had not been apprehended, while efforts to disprove his dalit status had gained momentum. Such attempts were directed towards protecting those responsible from the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the note said.
Representatives of the CPI(M), CPI, MCPIU, RSP, CPI(M-L), SUCI and CPI (M-L)-New Democracy participated in the meeting.
