A five-year-old girl died while undergoing treatment for burns at the Gandhi Hospital on Monday . Divya, the deceased, sustained about 90 per cent burns on her body while playing with matchsticks, said Mohd. Abdul Hayyum, sub-inspector of Jawharnagar police station (PS).

According to Mr. Hayyum, the incident took place at about 4 p.m. on February 25 at the girl’s residence in Chennapur. “Her mother Kavita had gone out to buy milk. Divya started playing with a matchbox and her clothes caught fire. She was in such a shock that she quietly sat in the same spot even as she was getting burnt,” he added.

After Kavita returned, she and her husband Govind rushed Divya to Rainbow Hospital first. However, authorities there asked them to take her to Gandhi Hospital, where she was admitted at about 3 a.m. on February 27 and later died at about 4.30 p.m. A case under Section 174 of the CrPC was registered after the incident.
