A lorry driver, who bore a grudge against his cleaner after he allegedly ran away with money meant for other workers, fatally knocked down the latter in Nizamabad district on Thursday.
Death was instant for Parashuram. The driver Beerappa was caught by passers-by after a chase and handed over to the police after beating him up.
The horrifying incident took place on Thursday morning on Armoor-Nizamabad road when the lorry reached Armoor to deliver groceries to Anganwadi workers.
Takes off with money
The lorry driver and cleaner engaged local labourers to unload the groceries.
After unloading, the driver gave ₹2,500 to Parashuram to be distributed among the labourers.
“We don't know what transpired after that but the cleaner allegedly disappeared with the money,” Jakranpally Sub-Inspector P. Sridhar Goud said.
Beerappa, who was pestered by the workers for payment of their wages, went around the neighbourhood on foot in search of the cleaner. Unable to find the cleaner, Beerappa asked the workers to get into the lorry assuring them that he would pay them their wages after unloading some goods at the next point.
Opportunity comes
After leaving the spot lorry driver noticed Parashuram walking on the road on the outskirts of Munipally.
“The driver lost his temper on seeing the cleaner. Even as the workers in the lorry kept on shouting, he slammed on the accelerator and hit the cleaner from behind,” the SI said.
Alerted by the screams of workers, villagers and passers-by chased the the lorry and caught the driver and handed him over to the police.
A murder case has been registered against the driver.
