On the occasion of the World Environment Day, a 5K run was organised by the Neknampur Lakes Restoration and Development Cooperative Society for the revival of Ibrahim Lake.

The programme, aimed at creating awareness among the locals, was attended by more than 500 residents living in apartments, gated communities and colonies in and around Neknampur village, in Rangareddy district.

The organisers highlighted that thousands of residents were still fighting to get better roads, drinking water, sewage and garbage collection and disposal support from the local administration. The pollution in the lake with industrial waste and sewage led to increase in mosquitoes and pollution of ground water, they said.

Sunil Chakravarthi, president of Neknampur Lakes Restoration and Development Cooperative Society said, “This is just the start of Ibrahim Lake revival. We will collaborate with the Government to target lake clean-up, beautification and develop a walking track around the lake. This event will also encourage people to demonstrate social responsibility in every little way they can. About 80 acres of Ibrahim Cheruvu has over 444 years history and was once a major drinking water source. It is painful to see the lake in dying state.”

One of the guests at the event was Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, MP, Chevella. “This kind of initiative will help the people understand importance of preservation of water bodies and the environment besides keeping the surroundings clean and green. On this occasion, I really appreciate the Society for their efforts towards clean and green environment,” he said.

Celebrities who participated in the run include producer Suresh Babu and actors Aryan Rajesh and Allari Naresh.
