50 new market sites identified in city

GHMC has been planning to take up 50 model markets at a cost of Rs.25 crore for which tenders were already called. A sum of Rs.50 lakh was proposed for each of the markets, according to Commissioner & Special Officer Somesh Kumar.

Currently, the municipal corporation is in charge of 30 markets under its jurisdiction and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao strongly feels that these are insufficient for a population nearly touching a crore in the capital.

The government feels a market is needed for every 10,000 citizens and none of the markets are in a proper condition with no parking facilities or cleanliness. In fact, Mr. Rao has directed the civic body to take up 150 markets providing with all the modern amenities for people to shop for fruits and vegetables in a cleaner ambience.

Mr. Somesh Kumar had also visited the Monda market a few days ago and announced the designs are being prepared for the proposed new markets.

It was felt that at least 400 square yards is necessary for each market and the Deputy Commissioners of each municipal circle has been given directions to furnish details of the land available in their respective areas for taking up new markets.
