There will be more autorickshaws on the roads of the State capital shortly. The gvernment has decided to sanction permits for 20,000 auto-rickshaws to ply within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits. These new autos to be permitted will have to be necessarily run on LPG or CNG.

It was only in November last the government had relaxed the ban on allowing new auto registrations and allowed 3,500 auto-rickshaw permits. Currently, there are over 77,000 autos being operated in GHMC limits. The process of registering new vehicles would be completed within four months.

Heavy demand

The latest decision is based on the heavy demand for sanction of new autos in the city and also to improve public transport sources. This, officials feel, would curtail the prevalent practice among auto drivers to demand excess fares, overloading and illegal trading.

Of these new sanctions, 13,000 would be under open category, 4,000 reserved for BCs, 2,000 for SCs and STs and 1,000 for minorities.
