A case has been registered against 13 prisoners of Cherlapalli Central Jail for allegedly attacking prison staff inside the jail premises, officials said on Tuesday.

While three Prison Officers, including a Deputy Superintendent sustained serious injuries, eight others received minor injuries when a group of 22 prisoners having alleged links with the ISI, attacked the jail staff on Monday, Jail Superintendent K L Srinivas Rao told PTI here.

Three Prison Officers, a Deputy Superintendent and two deputy jailers, were undergoing treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) while the remaining were treated in the out-patient department in the jail hospital, he said.

Trouble began after the Cherlapalli Jail personnel started checking the Papagni barracks where alleged ISI agents and terror suspects are lodged, on a tip-off that some of the inmates were carrying out illegal activities such as using cellphones in their cells.

However, when the jail staff was conducting the check, the prisoners there attacked them using stones, sticks and even cricket bats, Mr. Rao said.

The situation was brought under control on Monday itself, he said.

Following a complaint by Jail authorities, Khusaiguda police today registered a case against 13 prisoners under various sections including 147 (rioting), 148 (armed with deadly weapon), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from duty) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC, police said.
