A 23-year-old was allegedly shot dead by two youths over an argument during a cricket match on Sunday. The argument had taken place on Friday and the victim was killed while returning home after another game in south-west Delhi's Chhawla on Sunday morning.

Phone snatched

The police have detained the accused duo who claimed that the victim Dinesh alias Mangu had hit them on February 17 when they argued with him on the field, while playing for a rival team. He had also allegedly snatched away their phone. When they made a call to him on Saturday asking him to return the phone, he pruportedly challenged them to take it by force, said the police.

“This infuriarated the accused who decided to settle the issue through force,” said a senior police officer. The victim was on a two-wheeler with another friend, who had a close shave when the shots were fired.

A senior police officer said the incident took place around 2 p.m. when the victim, identified as Dinesh alias Mangu (23), was returning home on a scooter after a cricket match. Witnesses told the police that three men on another two-wheeler approached Dinesh and opened fire on him.

Multiple shots fired

“Dinesh was riding pillion and he fell off the scooter. Even as he was bleeding, the trio again shot him and drove away before his friend could raise an alarm. The friend immediately called up the police and Dinesh's family members after which he was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead,” said a senior police officer.

Relatives protest

Following the murder, Dinesh's relatives and neighbours staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the accused. Senior police officers said that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination and investigations are underway. Later on Sunday evening, both the suspects were detained.
