Younger generation must learn from women icons: Rajnath

March 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Speaking at a Delhi Police event on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said throughout history, Indian society has never imposed restrictions on women.

The Minister was addressing participants at the Delhi Police’s “Say No To Fear” event. “We have never imposed any restriction on our women. Had that been the case Maharani Lakshmibai might have not taken part in the freedom struggle with her newborn tied to her back,” he said.

Citing examples from the pages of history, Mr. Singh said be it freedom struggle or in the field of knowledge, women have done excellent work in the past. He further added that such icons should be brought out of the pages of history to inspire the younger generation.

Talking about women in his own life and thanking them for supporting in his journey so far, Mr. Singh maintained that no man was ever complete without women.

On the occasion, nearly 5,000 girls who had received self-defence training from the Delhi Police displayed their skills here.

Appreciating the initiative under which the city’s police aims to impart such training to 26,000 women in a year, Mr. Singh said: “I feel that through this self-defence training programme, we can nurture self-confidence among all girls.”
