A 22-year-old man from Manipur was allegedly beaten up by two policemen at Gandhi Vihar in North Delhi late on Thursday. The victim sustained fracture in his right hand and underwent treatment at Sant Parmanand Hospital in Civil Lines.
The incident took place in the wake of the protests by Civil Services aspirants in North Delhi. Ten protesters were arrested by the police on charges of rioting, assault on a public servant and damage to public property on Thursday. The victim’s relatives, however, claimed that he was not a part of the protesting group.
The victim has been identified as W. Sankhil, a former Delhi University student, from Manipur’s Chandel district. The attack took place when he was returning home from a friend’s house around 11-30 p.m.
According to the victim’s relatives, the policemen accused Sankhil of being involved in the UPSC protests and told him to prove otherwise. He was then taken to a nearby park and allegedly beaten up with batons.
“Sankhil sustained fracture in his right hand while trying to save himself from the beating. He somehow managed to flee from the spot after which we took him to hospital,” one of his relatives claimed.
A senior police officer said the policemen went to meet the victim to confirm the sequence of events, but found it difficult to understand what he was saying. No case has been registered so far.
