The Centre for Study of Social Systems (CSSS), in collaboration with the Equal Opportunity Office and the JNU Visually Challenged Students’ Forum, organised a day-long workshop at Jawaharlal Nehru University titled “Humari Zubaan — From Impairment to Disability” on Monday.

Rehabilitation

The participants deliberated that disabled people at most conferences are discussed from the rehabilitation perspective.

Not a tragedy

They said the conference wanted to highlight and advocate seeing disability as just another form of diversity rather than a tragedy.

The organisers said the disabled individuals are human beings too and have the right to compete in the job market, to be a lover/ spouse, to be parent, and to get good care.

A documentary titled “Humari Zubaan” was presented at the workshop. It’s based on 50 biographical narratives.

Accessibility issue

The students as well as representatives of student political parties spoke on the theme of ‘accessibility on the JNU campus’.

The day ended with a play by theatre group Soch titled “The Coffee Shop”, based on the life of people with disability.
