A 25-year-old woman was stabbed to death with a meat cleaver by two unidentified men near Karol Bagh metro station in Central Delhi on Friday.
No arrest has been made so far. The motive also remained unclear. Police sources said CCTV cameras had captured the attackers and could provide clues to their identity.
It has also been learnt that the woman was facing marital problems.
The victim, Simranjeet Kaur, lived with her family in South Delhi’s Nanakpura. She was employed with a Noida-based multi-national firm.
On the night of the incident, she had plans to pay a surprise visit to her Karol Bagh-based cousin and congratulate her for having a baby.
On her way back from office, she boarded a bus from Noida and got down at the Karol Bagh metro station around 7-30 p.m. The assailants struck when she had walked around half-a-kilometre from the metro station and was on the verge of reaching her paternal aunt’s house.
Eyewitnesses purportedly told the police that two men on a scooter screeched to a halt next to her and one of them attacked her with a meat cleaver. She was attacked twice. By the time passersby came to her rescue, the attackers sped away. Soon a Police Control Room van reached the spot and took the profusely bleeding Simranjeet to a hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Simranjeet had been married for over a year. A police source said her husband was one of the last persons to talk to her. The police suspect that the attackers were hired by someone else who wanted to eliminate her.
“We have registered a case of murder and are probing it from all possible angles,” said a senior police officer.
