A 22-year-old woman fought off robbers who tried to snatch her phone in Rohini’s Vijay Vihar on Friday night. Though the accused are absconding, the woman caught hold of their scooty, which has been seized by the police.

Geetu Sharma, a resident of Vijay Vihar Phase-II, was walking home from Rohini West Metro Station when two scooty-borne men attempted to snatch her mobile phone. The pillion rider tried to grab it, but the woman resisted. “I was talking on the phone when they came but I didn’t let go off my phone. The pillion rider didn’t leave it too so I got dragged with them,” said the woman who works with a private company in Gurugram.

Public rushes to rescue

Ms. Sharma said she raised an alarm and started shouting. A man who heard her, started running towards her but the accused managed to run. “It was a desolate road. First, a man who was walking a few metres ahead came towards me and then others followed. When the two saw them coming, they ran from the spot. The driver had also asked his associate to kill me,” she said.

However, the woman caught hold of their scooty, which prevented them from fleeing with the two-wheeler.

Police arrives late

The woman alleged that she called the police but they arrived nearly 30 minutes later.

She added that when she asked the officers to chase the snatchers, the officers allegedly didn’t move.

“I kept asking them to take action but they didn’t leave the spot. It’s a desolate street and a dark patch,” she alleged.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said that he spoke to the victim and a case has been registered under Section 356 (Assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) of the Indian Penal Code.

Bravery recognition

“I have also informed the girl that her bravery will be recognised,” he said.

The police said that the scooty recovered from the spot has been found to be stolen and efforts are being made to identify the robbers.
