Two rapes, including that of a lady constable, were reported in the city on Tuesday.

The first incident was reported from Safdarjung Enclave where a 23-year-old married woman was allegedly gang-raped by five men, including two of her relatives, on Tuesday night. According to the police, the woman in her complaint told them that she was raped by her two brothers-in-law and three of their friends.

The victim had been living separately from her husband for the past few months. On Tuesday night she went to her husband’s house for some work but did not find him there. Instead, her brothers-in-law and the three other men took her to an isolated place and raped her. The victim then made a call to the police who registered a case after medical examination of the victim confirmed rape.

In another incident on Tuesday, a 25-year-old lady constable allegedly tried to commit suicide in Khajuri Khas and accused a 28-year-old sub-inspector of raping her. It is learnt that the victim and the accused had come in contact three years ago during the Commonwealth Games when both of them were posted in Shakarpur police station. The two soon moved in together where the accused established physical relations on the pretext of marriage. He also made the woman undergo abortion a few times.

All this while, the accused evaded questions of marriage and remained non-committal about their future together.

On Tuesday, the victim tried to commit suicide by consuming poisonous substance and came to a nearby bus stop where she fell unconscious. She was taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where after receiving treatment she told the police about her experience. A case under Section 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code was registered. The accused SI is on the run, said the police.
