Over one lakh people in and around Kirti Nagar in West Delhi will benefit from a new underground reservoir that the Delhi Jal Board will commission in 15 days.
To benefit 1.5 lakh peopleDJB CEO Vijay Kumar said on Tuesday that the 4.5 million gallons per day (MGD) reservoir at Kirti Nagar will improve water supply in the area and benefit about 1.5 lakh people.
The reservoir is among three such facilities the DJB is aiming to commission before this year is out; the others being at Shalimar Park and Janakpuri. So far this year, the DJB has commissioned five reservoirs at Sultanpur Dabas, Qutabgarh, Ramlila Ground, Kirari and near ESI Hospital on Anandmai Marg.
Mr. Kumar said these, including Kirti Nagar, had been awaiting commissioning despite being ready for years. “We have been able to commission five underground reservoirs this year by using water more efficiently and re-routing it to the reservoirs,” said the CEO, adding that raw water supply to Delhi had not been augmented.
He explained that underground reservoirs make reaching the customers at the tail-end of the network easier as supply can be controlled. There is a pressure created when pumping water from underground reservoirs, which is not the case when drawing directly from the pipeline.
