Heavy rain on Wednesday afternoon led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Millennium City, slowing down traffic on many stretches.
However, there were no reports of major traffic jams in the city. Within an hour after it started raining around noon, roads across Gurugram were flooded.
Affected areas
The worst affected were Sector 15 Part-II, Sector 16, Sector 46, Sector 5, Sector 6, Sector 50, Sushant Lok, DLF areas, Suncity, Hero Honda Chowk, HUDA City Centre, IFFCO Chowk, Palam Vihar, Golf Course Road, Old Delhi-Gurugram Road, Basai and Kanhai villages.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Simardeep Singh said waterlogging at three to four points in the city led to slowing down of traffic.
Overflowing sewer
“Traffic on Kanhai Chowk-HUDA City Centre stretch was affected due to an overflowing sewer. Similarly, one of the carriageways on the road outside Medanta Hospital was flooded, causing traffic to slowdown. Also, there were reports of waterlogging and traffic slowdown at Manesar and near Basai flyover,” Mr. Singh said.
School buses hit
Mr. Singh said additional police force and civil staff were deputed at these points to manage smooth traffic flow.
No major traffic jam was reported despite heavy rain as most water got drained before the evening rush hour. However, parents and school children had a harrowing time, with buses running behind schedule.
Storm water drains
The Suncity township in Sector 54 of Golf Course Road was among the worst hit due to flooding.
“The storm water drains of the township are still not connected to the main HUDA drain, leading to waterlogging every time it rains. Wednesday’s flooding was unprecedented, with three to four feet of water at some places in the township,” said Suncity Residents’ Welfare Association adviser Abhey Poonia.
Similarly, the road outside Raheja Atlantis in Sector 31 on National Highway 8 was flooded, making it difficult for vehicles to ply on the stretch.
