In a joint operation of the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Police, a 30-year-old gangster carrying a reward of ₹1 lakh was arrested following a shoot-out in UP’s Amroha in the early hours of Wednesday.

Anwar, who is wanted in several cases in Delhi and UP, is a member of the Irfan alias Chhainu gang.

The police said that Anwar suffered three bullet injuries to his legs during the brief exchange of fire and has been admitted to a hospital in Meerut.

Bounty declared

A bounty of ₹1 lakh was declared on Anwar’s head by the Delhi Police and ₹25,000 by the UP Police. Anwar is wanted for killing two people within a span of a few hours in October last year in north-east Delhi, said a police officer.

Anwar and his associates had shot Wajid and Faiz on October 22 in Brahmpuri. Faiz was injured and fell down but Wajid started running. Anwar and others chased Wajid into a house and shot him 20 times, said the police.

During investigation, it was revealed that Wajid belonged to rival Nasir gang.

In another incident the next day, Anwar and his associates had shot dead Arif Hussain, another member of Nasir gang.

Tip-off

A team of the Special Cell was on the lookout for Anwar and kept an eye on his hideouts in Delhi and UP. The team received information that Anwar had a hideout in Amroha and that his wife often accompanied him so as to not raise suspicion, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah.

The team got word that Anwar would be travelling to Delhi with an associate and his wife to commit a crime in the early hours of March 14, said the officer.

Along with a team of the UP Police, the Special Cell team put barricades on the road that the car was taking. Around 4 a.m., a white vehicle being driven by Anwar was spotted and it was signalled to stop. Anwar, however, rammed past the barricades.

A short chase ensued but Anwar’s car was quickly surrounded by the police. They were asked to surrender, but Anwar and his associate came out of the car and started firing at the police.

A UP Police inspector was shot in his hand while two Delhi Police officers had a narrow escape as bullets hit their bullet-proof jackets, said the officer.

Arms recovered

The police rushed the accused and he was overpowered. Anwar’s wife was nabbed but his associate managed to escape.

A semi-automatic 7.65mm pistol and six live cartridge were recovered from Anwar. A 0.30 mm carbine and 20 live cartridges were recovered from the car along with ₹75,000.
