Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the upgraded Talkatora Indoor Stadium and Sports Facility Block here on Wednesday in the presence of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi.
The Chief Minister described the complex as a unique piece of modern sports architecture with an elegant look. She lauded the New Delhi Municipal Council architects for designing it so well.
Boxing venue
The stadium will serve as a venue for the boxing event and also as a training centre during the upcoming Games in October.Prior to that the Commonwealth Boxing Championship is scheduled to take place here from March 10.
Ms. Dikshit said the Talkatora Stadium was worth replicating in all respects.
It has been designed and constructed to meet international standards and has a new Sports Facility Block with underground parking facilities.
The stadium has been connected to a tunnel which will be used by the athletes. A number of environment-friendly material and energy-efficient devices have been used in this block to make it a green building.
The facility block is a multi-purpose air-conditioned building constructed under the green building concept with landscaping for energy conservation, energy-efficient lights and solar compound lights.
The existing Talkatora Indoor Stadium has been upgraded with state-of-the-art facilities which include acoustic ceiling of dome, scoreboard, video screens and sports lighting.
It has a seating capacity for 2,700 people.
After the Commonwealth Games the entire complex will be used for various socio-cultural and official purposes.
