A 24-year-old differently-abled woman was allegedly “humiliated” by an Uber driver for carrying a wheelchair, saying it could “ruin” his vehicle.

The cab aggregator said it has a “zero-tolerance” policy towards discrimination of any kind and had reviewed the matter.

‘Drivers unhappy’

Preeti Singh, an intern with a chartered accountancy firm, had taken cabs from south Delhi to west Delhi and back on Monday when heavy rain lashed the Capital.

She wrote on Facebook, “... both drivers weren’t happy about keeping the wheelchair in their cars. During my trip back home, I really felt humiliated and insulted when the driver kept saying ‘my car’s gonna get ruined’ [sic].”

She wrote that after reaching her destination she asked her brother to clean the cab with a cloth “just so he never says that again to anyone [sic]”.

No luggage carriers

She added that this was not the first time she had faced an issue with drivers unwilling to keep her wheelchair on their car seats.

The Shri Ram College of Commerce graduate said there were no luggage carriers on the cars and the boots did not have enough space for a wheelchair.
