Two youth have been arrested for allegedly writing a threat letter last week to JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid — recently arrested on the charge of sedition over a controversial JNU event.

Identified as Saurabh and Sulabh, the men in their 20s, were called for questioning at Tilak Marg Police Station on Sunday following which they were arrested, said the police.

Among the two, Saurabh is the younger brother of the main accused in the case, Amit Jani. He claims to be the national president of rightwing outfit UP Navnirman Sena and is still absconding.

Sources said Saurabh had made a PCR call after keeping the bag in the bus, which contained the threat letter and a country- made pistol.

He was accompanied by Sulabh and both fled after the call was made, said sources. Both have been booked under the Arms Act and criminal conspiracy.

“The exact intention of committing the activity will only be ascertained once Jani is arrested. After preliminary investigations, it appears that it was done to gain publicity,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Romil Baniya. The bag contained a two-line note stating that they will behead Kanhaiya and Umar. The letter was also purportedly signed by Jani but was written by someone else, said a source. Last month, it was Jani who had issued an ultimatum to the two students on Facebook to leave Delhi by March 31.

He threatened the duo that in case they failed to do so, he would make sure they were “gunned down” by his volunteers. “There are just four days left in the ultimatum of leaving Delhi. Tell us, countrymen, should we get them bombed? All preparations have been made. Boys are ready and so are the weapons!...,” read the alleged post. When The Hindu contacted him on WhatsApp following the letter incident, one of his responses was: “How many pistols will the police seize? A pistol will emerge from every house.”
