Following the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party’s call for setting up an accountability commission in the municipal corporations and the Delhi Government, a group of Congress Ministers on Saturday termed the Opposition’s tactics, which included a meeting with the Lieutenant-Governor, mere “theatrics”.

“If the BJP was serious about setting up such a commission, all they had to do was pass a resolution in the three Houses and forward to it to the government for approval,” said Minister in-charge of Local Bodies Arvinder Singh. “A retired BJP leader should be made the chairperson of the accountability commission so they can first check the credibility of their own party.”

Mr. Singh was addressing a press briefing along with his Cabinet colleagues at the Chief Minister’s residence here on Saturday.

In retaliation, the Delhi BJP lambasted the Congress government and said it was running away from setting up the accountability commission.

Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel said the opposition from the Congress stemmed from the fear that such a commission would hold it responsible for scams carried out by the government in the last 15 years.
