Lamps made from old toys by Robin Passi

Artiste Robin Passi did not go to a stationery shop to buy material to create his artworks. He instead went around the by-lanes of Mayapuri and collected junk from scrap dealers and sourced old toys to give them a new lease of life.

What he has done with the junk is truly unique — he has created functional, usable art from materials that were of no use to anybody.

Candle stands made from old automotive parts, lamps made from old toys and installations made using an old mattress as a background adorn the gallery at the India International Centre where the exhibition is being held.

The show titled ‘Salvaged Shadows’ is an effort to bring back objects that had faded into the past and create something that is practical and can be used to brighten up any space.

As unique as the works is the story of the artiste, who is a Class XII student studying for his Board exams, while his works are being appreciated at the gallery. Robin is largely a self-taught artist apart from a few courses he has taken abroad.

From a young age, he took to recycling object to give them a new function. Over the years, he has developed a signature style and flair that has been widely appreciated.

The exhibition is on at the Art Gallery, Kamaladevi Complex, India International Centre till January 13.
