Turning household waste into compost

September 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 03:15 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Household green waste produced in South Delhi’s Vasant Vihar will now be sent to a composting facility in a local park, cutting down the amount of trash that goes to garbage dumps by 75 per cent.

The Residents’ Welfare Association of D-7 Vasant Vihar and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation will maintain the composting facility at Shaheed Rajguru Park. While inaugurating the facility on Wednesday, SDMC Standing Committee chairperson Radhey Shyam Sharma said the civic body will expand the project to other wards.

The three-acre park has multiple pits to convert green waste into compost using organic technology. Though the SDMC has been composting green waste from over 6,400 parks for years now, this is the first time that household trash will be segregated and sent to the pits.

The RWA had been working on the segregation mechanism for about two years now. The initiative was the idea of 95-year-old resident Promila Vohra.
