The Delhi Police have arrested two persons and apprehended a minor for killing a 21-year-old student in north-west Delhi’s Netaji Subhash Place a month ago, the police said on Sunday.

The trio and another accomplice had allegedly stabbed Mohit after he refused to share a cigarette with them, they added.

The trio were held from Shakurpur JJ Colony on Saturday, while the fourth accused is absconding, the police said.

500 persons questioned

More than 500 people, including local ruffians involved in street crimes, were questioned and footage from over 100 CCTV cameras installed in the area were examined to gather clues about suspects, they added.

Mohit and his friends Robin and Lalit were out eating ice cream around 1 a.m. on March 22. They had walked around one-and-a-half km away from their home to Netaji Subhash Place market, the police said.

Mohit was smoking with his friends in a service lane near a foot overbridge when four persons arrived on a motorcycle and scooter.

“The accused approached Mohit and asked him to share his cigarette. Mohit refused as he did not know them. An altercation broke out between them which soon turned ugly,” a police officer said.

Two of the accused overpowered Mohit from behind while another stabbed him in the left side of the chest with a knife, an investigating officer said.

Mohit’s friends tried to intervene but fled the spot when they saw the accused stabbing him. The miscreants ran away after Mohit collapsed on the road.

Following this, his friends returned and called the police control room. Mohit was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) A. K. Lal said a case of murder was registered and four teams were formed to identify the attackers.

‘Blind murder’

“It was a blind murder case because the suspects were unknown to the deceased or his friends, who were the prime witness to the murder,” Mr. Lal said.

Analysis of footage from CCTV cameras did not help much, he added.

“The suspected bike was spotted in Shakurpur. We activated our criminal intelligence network, which eventually helped us identify the suspects,” Mr. Lal added.

The two accused adults were interrogated, during which they confessed to the murder. Their bloodstained clothes have been recovered, the officer said.

The victim was pursing a graphic designing course from a private institute in Netaji Subhash Place, the police said.
