A 22-year-old trainee doctor driving a BMW car rammed into a cab on Tilak Marg here in the early hours of Monday killing its driver on the spot. Such was the impact of the accident that the cab caught fire and its driver was thrown out on the road.
Mohammad Rafiq, 39, was driving towards India Gate in his Maruti ECCO car coming from the direction of ITO chowk around 1 a.m. when the BMW car on Bhagwan Dass Road hit him from the right side at the traffic signal.
According to the complainant in the case, constable Sukender, who was on the patrolling in the area at the time of accident, the BMW was being driven rashly and at high speed.
According to the First Information Report, the BMW hit the cab at such high speed that its driver Rafiq was thrown out on the road from the window.
The cab then hit the central verge and caught fire. Rafiq, a resident of Mandwali Fezalpur, was taken to a hospital by a Police Control Room vehicle and declared brought dead on arrival.
Ayush Arora, who was behind the wheel in the BMW, was arrested. He is a resident of Bhiwani in Haryana. His father Inder Jit Arora runs a hospital.
One of Ayush’s friends, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Ayush studied at Maulana Azad Medical College and was doing internship at JPN Hospital.
“Two of Ayush’s friends, Shiv and Nishan, were also with him in the car when the accident took place. The blood samples have revealed that Ayush was not in inebriated state at the time of accident,” said a senior police officer.
A case under Section 279 (rash driving) and Section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Tilak Marg police station.
