An on-duty traffic police constable was killed on Friday when a speeding truck hit his two-wheeler after he attempted to stop the vehicle from gaining access to a no-entry area in outer Delhi’s Alipur. The accused driver has been arrested and was found to be drunk, said the police.

Traffic Constable Yashbir Kumar (45) was on duty near Palla traffic signal on National Highway-1 when the incident occurred around 12.30 a.m.

The traffic police had restricted plying of trucks in the area as there were many wedding processions passing through the stretch and movement of heavy vehicles was causing a traffic jam.

Case registered

As the trucks were being diverted to an alternate route, the offending truck driver sped up. Mr. Kumar tried to stop the vehicle but was hit by the truck, said a traffic police official.

The driver was arrested on the spot and has been identified as Biru Prasad Yadav, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Kumar was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

“We have registered a case of causing death by negligence and rash and negligent driving against Yadav,” said DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta.

Mr. Kumar had joined the Delhi Police in 2010, two years after he retired from the Army. He had transferred to the traffic police two months ago. Mr. Kumar is survived by his wife and three children.
