Delhi Development Minister Gopal Rai on Friday wrote to Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal over concerns related to the possible spread of diseases and related issues being faced simultaneously by the residents of Tikri Khampur village and vegetable wholesalers based out of the Azadpur Mandi since prohibition on the dumping of garbage at the Bhalswa landfill site.

Mr. Rai urged the L-G to direct the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to allow dumping of waste from the wholesale vegetable market at Bhalswa to ensure the continuing functionality of the market as well as nip any possible outbreak of diseases in the bud.

“The North municipal corporation used to dump waste from the Azadpur Mandi at the Bhalswa landfill; but this was prohibited and now this waste, it has been decided, will be dumped on land in Tikri Khampur, which is later to be converted into compost,” Mr. Rai stated.

‘Outbreak of disease’

“This move has triggered a protest from local residents... which also led to a blockade of National Highway-1... disposal of waste has become a serious issue and waste from the market is lying at various locations and may lead to an outbreak of disease,” he said, adding that urgent steps needed to be taken towards solving the problem by the municipal body concerned.
