The teenaged girl who brought the two-year-old baby girl to AIIMS' Trauma Centre last month has purportedly confessed before the Child Welfare Committee to having beaten up and bitten the child.
During the hearing on Friday, the Lajpat Nagar CWC noted that the teenager used to take good care of the child. She would feed her properly and keep her clean. However, “she beat her (baby) up only on January 17,” said the Committee, adding that around 10 p.m. on the fateful day the baby was crying incessantly when the girl tried to calm her down. She then allegedly slapped her three-four times and bit her in frustration and anger.
The teenaged girl gave some biscuits to the child and made her sleep. The baby woke up soon and defecated, following which the girl took her to the bathroom for a wash. The baby somehow fell down and sustained serious head injuries.
“Her head and lips were bleeding. She (the young girl) took the baby to bed and went out to get cotton gauze and first-aid material….” She tried to put a bandage around the wound, but in vain.
The baby apparently fell unconscious. The girl called up Dilshad alias Raj Kumar, who advised her against going out at night. The next day when the baby did not wake up, she rushed her to a hospital with the help of a woman working at the guesthouse. The Committee observed that the baby might have suffered fractures due to the fall in the bathroom.
