A tuition teacher was shot dead by bike-borne assailants in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka on Monday night.
The suspects had not been identified till Tuesday evening. A case of murder has been registered.
Witness accounts
According to the police, Vikas alias Vikki worked at a tuition centre in Haryana.
He was on the way home when the alleged incident took place.
The police suspect that at least a dozen bullets were fired, four of which hit him.
Witnesses told the police that the incident took place around 9 p.m. when motorcycle-borne men approached Vikas and fired at him. Quoting witnesses, a police officer said Vikas tried to save himself but was surrounded by armed assailants.
“They fired at him and he sustained gunshot injuries on the face, abdomen and chest. He entered a shop looking for cover but they followed him. The accused fled after he collapsed, leaving a profusely bleeding Vikas behind,” said a senior police officer.
According to witnesses, the incident took place in full public view. They said a number of people were present but that failed to deter the assailants and people were scared to intervene as the attackers had firearms.
Police informed
One of the passersby informed the police, who rushed the injured man to a nearby hospital. Vikas was declared brought dead.
Probe so far has revealed that two men from the locality had accused the deceased of harassing their sister a few weeks ago. The police suspect that as the reason behind the murder but are yet to verify these claims.
“A case of murder has been registered. Prima facie the role of five men is suspected, and efforts to identify them and the vehicles they used are underway. We are making local inquiries and also looking at CCTV footage from areas near the murder spot. As of now, personal enmity appears to be the prime motive behind the murder but we will be able to say more only after further investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-west) Surender Kumar.
The incident also sparked protest in the area. People known to the deceased and other residents blamed the police for the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the area. The police deployed additional men in the area as preventive measure.
