A 40-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday for allegedly driving the black SUV that ran over a 26-year-old woman in south Delhi's Saket on July 31.

Saket resident Preeti Singh was driving the car that ran over Varnita Garg, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ishwar Singh.

Ms. Garg, who missed a surgery scheduled for Thursday due to low platelet count, is a junior dietician with PSRI. She is on ventilator support at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Witness account

According to the police, Ms. Garg was hit and run over by two speeding SUVs in a matter of seconds. A security guard walking behind her told the police that the cars were being driven rashly and seemed as if they were racing.

The first car hit Ms. Garg, flinging her in the air, before she was run over by the second car. Both car drove off after the accident. A witness managed to note down three digits of the black SUV’s registration number.

Mobile phone location

Thanks to this clue, the police managed to trace Ms. Singh. Her mobile phone was found active at the location around the time of the incident, the police said.

However, the police are still clueless about the first car that hit Ms. Garg.
