A 22-year-old man lost his legs while a girl, said to be around 10 years old, was left with fractured limbs after they were run over by a train in Narela.

The police initially treated the case as an accident since the girl had claimed that she fell onto the tracks while going to the market.

Change in story

However, the girl later changed her story and said that she and the man, Manoj Singh (name changed), had decided to commit suicide as her parents were opposed to the two of them spending time together.

The police are now also probing the suicide angle.

Manoj has also claimed that the girl had on her own free will joined him to jump in front of the train.

POCSO Act

Even if his claim is found to be true, Manoj may still be charged with abduction and face action under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as the girl is a minor.

According to the police, the incident happened around 8.25 p.m. on Monday. The duo were found unconscious with injuries on their legs.

Manoj said that they had both decided to lie on the tracks to wait for a train to run them over. “My legs were stretched all the way up to the other side of the rails and were run over by the train, which chopped them off. Her legs were shorter and did not come under the wheels, but she was also left with broken bones. We fell unconscious after that,” said Manoj.

A few people passing by noticed the accident and informed the police. Since the incident occurred on Rakhi, it was assumed that the victims were siblings.

The police rushed the victims to Raja Harishchandra Hospital, from where they were referred to Lok Nayak Hospital.

During initial probe, it was found that the duo knew each other for the last two years and were neighbours in the same building.

Manoj has claimed that the girl is 12 years old and that her family was opposed to the two seeing each other.
