A woman’s decomposed body was found at the NTPC’s dumping yard in Jaitpur area of South-East Delhi after a passerby saw some stray dogs digging it out from a heap of ash.
The unidentified victim had injury marks on her face and neck. Police suspect she was beaten up before being strangled to death. “The reason behind her death and whether she was sexually assaulted will only be ascertained after the autopsy report is out,” said a police officer.
The matter came to light around 9-30 a.m. on Tuesday after a man walking past the dumping yard behind the NTPC compound saw some dogs digging out a human body from beneath a heap of ash. He immediately raised an alarm and drew the attention of some CISF personnel passing through the area.
The police were also informed and a Police Control Room van that reached the spot took the body to a mortuary where it will be kept for 72 hours for identification purposes.
The body was dumped in a shallow pit. “The woman appeared to be married and was likely in her twenties. She was wearing a saree and blouse and had bangles in both her hands,” said the officer.
Considering the extent to which the body had decomposed, it appeared she was killed about two days ago. The physical assault appeared to have been directed at her face as it bore the marks of brutal injury.
A case of murder has been registered at Jaitpur police station.
