A speeding dumper truck rammed a cab before running over two bikers and dragging them for a few metres in Mehrauli on August 5, the police said.

Eyewitness account

While the cab driver suffered injuries, both bikers were killed in the accident. The dumper truck has been seized even as the accused driver is absconding.

Cab driver Shameem was near Nanda Hospital crossing while on the way from Saket to Chattarpur Extension when the accident happened around 11.15 p.m.

Cab on the divider

According to Mr. Shameem, the speeding dumper truck rammed his vehicle from the side. The impact forced his car onto the road divider, causing Mr. Shameem to fall on the passenger seat.

He exited his vehicle immediately and saw the dumper truck hit a motorcycle, and drag both the vehicle and the two riders for a few metres.

When the truck came to a halt, Mr. Shameem saw one of the bikers bleeding profusely while the severed body of the other man lay nearby.

“The dumper truck driver fled the spot... We were not in a state to chase him,” said Mr. Shameem, who called up the police control room immediately.

A police team reached the spot and rushed the victims to a hospital, where the two bikers were declared brought dead. All vehicles involved in the accident were damaged.

Based on Mr. Shameem’s statement, a case under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 337 (causing grievous hurt) and 279 (rash and negligent driving) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused dumper truck driver.

Bikers identified

The bikers have been identified as Umesh Sharma (26), a chef in a local restaurant who hailed from Uttarakhand, and Sanjay.

“Mr. Sharma was riding pillion while Mr. Sanjay was driving the bike,” said a police officer.
