Social activist Shabnam Hashmi has alleged that a man claiming to be a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector threatened to kill her in an encounter, and that they were on a mission to surround and kill those who did not have an Aadhaar card.

‘Surround and kill’

Ms. Hashmi has also released an audio clip where a man is heard issuing threats. She claimed it was Sub-Inspector Sandip Malik from the Lajpat Nagar police station, whom she had dialled to find out about a case involving an auto driver who was picked up.

The man in the audio clip was heard saying that the government had launched a “surround and kill” ( ghero aur maaro ) campaign against those who did not have an Aadhaar card or any other identity proof.

He also threw a volley of questions at Ms. Hashmi, even as she repeatedly tried to talk about the case in question, where the auto driver is the husband of a former student of a school run by Ms. Hashmi’s trust.

She also alleged that besides threatening her, the “policeman” had also abused her.

While a copy of the tape has been submitted to the Delhi Police Commissioner according to Ms. Hashmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Romil Baaniya said no formal complaint had been lodged.

He added that no Sub-Inspector by the name of Sandip Malik was posted at the Lajpat Nagar police station. “There is a constable by the same name though, but he does not use the phone number in question,” said Mr. Baaniya.
