Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued notices to the Delhi government and the Delhi Police over allegations of abuse of residents of a State-run shelter home for girls.

Forced injections

The NHRC observed that the report said at least 10 girls living at the home in west Delhi had complained of being molested by members of the staff and being subjected to forced injections of drugs and beatings. The NHRC issued notices to the Delhi Chief Secretary M.M. Kutty and Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, asking for detailed reports within four weeks.

‘Indicative of negligence’

The NHRC observed that the incident, if true, was “disgusting and indicative of gross negligence on the part of the Department of Social Welfare” of the Delhi government.
