Students’ Federation of India activists stormed the Banga Bhavan here on Thursday while protesting against the recent death of an SFI activist while being transported in police custody in Kolkata during a protest action there.
The gates and barricades of Banga Bhavan were broken as angry activists demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the incident.
Senior Communist Part of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury also reached the spot and spoke to the students.
“This incident was not a one-off case of police brutality: rather it shows the deterioration of law and order, and the continuous assault on democracy and democratic institutions in the last two years, since the Mamta Banerjee-led government came to power in the State. There have been more than 600 instances of attacks on elected students’ unions and student activists,” said SFI Delhi vice-president Sunand.
Students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, including those from the breakaway group SFI-JNU, also participated in the protest to show solidarity.
