Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Saturday inspected the “country’s first large-scale” construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant in north Delhi’s Burari area, where he directed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to set up a second such plant in Rani Khera by the end of the year.
Mr. Baijal was accompanied by the north civic body commissioner P. K. Gupta and other senior civic officials. The L-G also instructed officials to use automation in manufacturing products from recycled C&D waste.
Mr. Gupta informed the L-G that the plant, which has a capacity of 2,000 metric tonnes, has been running since 2009 and till date over 30 lakh metric tonnes of C&D waste had been recycled and converted into products such as sand, aggregates. “The project is an example of a paradigm shift from illegal dumping to scientific processing and recycling of C&D waste. This is a major initiative to deal with the problem of disposal of waste and the resultant air pollution,” Mr. Baijal said.
“Mr. Baijal also directed the north civic body to set up a second plant at Rani Khera with a capacity of 1,000 MT per day, extendable to 2,000 MT, on 3.5 acres of land allotted by the DDA for the purpose, by December 31, 2017,” the Raj Niwas said in a statement.
