A 59-year-old security guard at a post office in Rohini was murdered allegedly by his own nephew in the early hours of Saturday. The minor was apprehended in the evening, the police said, adding that the motive behind the murder is suspected to be theft.

Sushil Kumar Saini, a resident of Naharpur working as multi-tasking staff at Rohini Sector 7 post office, was to retire in February. His body was found outside the post office in the morning. “Around 7 a.m, a call was received about a person lying dead. When the police reached the spot (post office), the guard was found dead. His hands and legs were tied with a rope and there was tape on his mouth,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta.

Forehead injury

The police said that there was a deep wound on Mr Saini’s forehead which seemed to have been inflicted with a blunt object.

When the spot was investigated, the police found ₹20,000 and a hard disk of the recording device missing. The police then questioned several people in the area and Mr Saini’s family members, including his sons. They also obtained and analysed the CCTV footage of the area.

“The CCTV footage inside the premises was taken away by the accused, so we examined the footage of the streets. A person was seen in the footage and was identified by several people as the 16-year-old nephew of the deceased,” said Mr Gupta.

The accused was apprehended from his house a few meters away from the victim’s home. “Two hard disks, one mobile phone, ₹20,000 and a broken bat used in commission of crime was also recovered from his possession,” the DCP said.

During interrogation the accused reportedly told the police that he was in dire need of money and was aware of the work timings of Saini. “He said he didn’t realise that the victim would die. The motive was essentially theft. He is an amateur; failed to break the locks of the treasury where a significant amount of cash was kept,” said a senior police officer privy to the case.

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and will produce the accused before the court on Sunday.
