In a Standing Committee meeting held on Tuesday, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) decided to take strict action against hospitals and malls charging parking fees illegally.

The SDMC directed all District Commissioners (DCs) to prepare detailed reports of hospitals and malls that were charging parking fees, and said that errant establishments would be sealed if the rules are not complied with.

The DCs told the committee that 18 out of 20 malls that were inspected by the civic body were charge parking fees illegally.

‘Report in seven days’

Bhupender Gupta, the Chairman of the Standing Committee said: “We have served notices to those who are charging parking fees from visitors despite the direction issued by the civic agency last year. Further action will be taken after I get the report in seven days.”

Leader of the Congress in the SDMC Abhishek Dutt also raised concerns over inaction against mall owners for flouting the rules.

“Most malls in south Delhi are not just flouting parking norms but have also encroached public space by installing additional stalls and cafeterias in the basements. Why is action only taken upon street vendors and not the mall owners?,” he said.
