Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Saturday stressed the need for eliminating casteism while speaking at the 29th All India Sanatan Dharam Mahasammelan here.
Stating that “Sanatan Dharam is part of our heritage,” Ms. Kumar said it was important that it worked towards the elimination of casteism. “A few laws have been enacted in this regard but laws are not enough to change the mindset,” she said, while noting that all religions had one soul.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for her part spoke of the need to enrich the values of unity, harmony and co-existence. Pointing out that all religions were equal in the eyes of the Constitution, which is unique, Ms. Dikshit expressed her pleasure at the coming together of the Sanatan Dharam and Arya Samaj to disseminate the real essence of dharma.
She said the meeting was very important as it had brought together a large number of people who were involved in religious work. In doing so, the meeting had also helped many overcome their differences and work together for the common good of all.
Rajinder Nagar MLA and Sanatan Dharam leader Rama Kant Goswami of the Congress spoke about how the Sanatan Dharam has resolved to render its substantial co-operation in cleaning of the river Yamuna. He also demanded the setting up of a board -- on the lines of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board – for managing the various temples in Delhi.
Mr. Goswami also called upon people to oppose commercialisation of religion.
