Ryan school principal arrested, gets bail

The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested the principal of Ryan International School, Sandhya Sabu, and four others for causing death by negligence of a six-year-old student, Divyansh Kakrora.

The five were arrested under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code around 2.30 p.m. and released on bail within hours, a senior police officer said.

Besides Ms Sabu, 50, the others who were arrested were class teacher Minakshi Kapoor, 38, the school’s drinking water system operator Yogesh Kholiya, 23, the maintenance in-charge of the tank Puran Singh Bisht, 65, and gardener Ram Narayan, 44.

Investigators said their probe suggested several areas of negligence, such as allowing Divyansh to loiter to an unsafe place, not keeping the area locked and possible tampering with evidence. The police officer said they were also probing if norms in the construction of the water tank were flouted.

Divyansh was found dead in a water tank under the school's amphitheatre on January 30. The police were informed of the incident by the hospital and not by the school, prompting the boy’s parents to suspect a conspiracy.

Around four dozen members of the school staff, including the principal, were repeatedly questioned in the days following the incident that led to the Delhi Government launching its own probe.
