A day after Rezang La war memorial here — built in memory of 1962 Indo-China war martyrs — was vandalised by unidentified people, ex-servicemen on Wednesday demanded that the culprits be arrested without delay and the liquor vend near the memorial be moved immediately.

The ex-servicemen submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh on Wednesday evening in this regard demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and repair of the memorial.

Security at site

They also demanded a guard and a keeper be appointed at the memorial and that the police be directed to protect the memorial from anti-social elements.

Earlier, the ex-servicemen, who had gathered at the memorial to pay homage to martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas, criticised the local administration for its alleged failure to protect the honour of the martyrs. Major (retd.) Ishwar Singh Jhakhar said the ex-servicemen would be forced to go on an indefinite fast if the culprits were not held in a week.

Broken benches

The memorial was found vandalised with benches broken and floodlights damaged when some ex-servicemen visited the site on Tuesday. A case has been registered and the matter is being probed, said the police.
