Following the attack on a group of foreigners outside the historic Jama Masjid on Sunday, a red alert was sounded in the Capital.
“A red alert has been sounded and we are conducting checks at various points. The attack seems to be an attempt to create panic ahead of the Commonwealth Games,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range) Karnal Singh.
Two Taiwanese nationals sustained bullet injuries when two young men on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire at them around 11-30 a.m.
“We have intensified checking at various entry points to the Capital. The police presence has also been increased outside temples and other religious places. The motorcycles are being randomly stopped and checked,” said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile, the parking of vehicles outside Commonwealth Games venues and important buildings has been banned in the wake the firing incident. An order to this effect was issued by Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra on Sunday evening.
Checking of vehicles
“The police will check the vehicles passing through these areas,” said a Delhi Government official.
PTI adds: Meanwhile the Government on Sunday said that the firing incident at Jama Masjid will have no impact whatsoever on the Commonwealth Games and the athletes scheduled to come to Delhi for the mega event.
“We were always aware that the enemies of the nation would try to do something. It will have no impact whatsoever in the readiness of our people. It will have no impact on the sportspersons schedule to come,” Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy told reporters here.
